Winter Tournament Week

MGS —

After a two year absence...

...winter tournament week was able to take place in all its glory, and we had teams travel tall across the South Island participating in tournaments and events.

Junior Basketball

Our Junior Boys Basketball team headed to Nelson for the SISS Junior Tournament, a great experience for a number of boys who were attending tournament for the first time. After a tough opening few days, the boys bounced back to win their final three games to show some great improvement and character.

Hockey

Both our hockey teams were in action close to home, with the girls tournament played in Christchurch and the boys tournament in Ashburton. The girls had a fantastic week, winning three of their six games including an exciting penalty shootout against Southland Girls to reach the 9th & 10th playoff where they finished the tournament in 10th place. This rounded out a great season for the girls who won the Canterbury Hockey SSL Div 3 competition, and have been promoted into Div 2 for next year!

The boys also had a great week in Ashburton, travelling down SH1 each day. The boys made it through to the semi finals, going down in a close match 1-0 to Logan Park, and finished in fourth place. Both teams had some fantastic support throughout the week which was awesome to see.

Football Boys

The Raiders also had the luxury of playing a tournament at home, and had their supporters on the edge of their seats all week long. Two wins in pool play put them through to the top 8, before going down in their quarter final match to a strong Paraparaumu team. They finished the week in dramatic fashion, a penalty shootout against Nayland College to finish 8th.

Badminton

Our Senior Boys team of Emmanuel Chong, Josh Ford, Tuan Luong & Harrison Dick competed in the Canterbury Secondary School Badminton Championships, a two day event. The team picked up a couple of wins across the event to finish in fourth position.

Equestrian

Alice Wainwright was our sole competitor in the SISS Equestrian competition, a new event for tournament week. She placed 4th in Dressage, 5th in 80cm Arena Eventing and 4th in 80cm Show Hunter. Alice also picked up an award for sportsmanship!

Netball

The Senior A Girls were in Timaru for the SISS Champs, competing in the B Grade section. The girls were on fire all week long, winning six of eight games to finish sixth in their grade. It was a phenomenal effort from the girls who only had 8 players for their final two matches with two players having to leave early to make it to Basketball tournament.

Football Girls

Dunedin was the destination for the Lady Raiders, who were competing in their first tournament since 2017. Coming off an agonising shootout loss in the local Canterbury final, the girls played against some quality opposition throughout the week, performing admirably and securing two wins – one of which was a penalty shootout that had the team and management very excited!

Senior Basketball

Our Senior Basketball teams had the long haul down to Invercargill for the SISS Champs. The tournament was played over four days, with a busy schedule for both teams. The girls finished the week in 8th position, while the boys finished 14th.

A very busy week for all our teams, and huge thank you to all our coaches, managers and staff who travelled across the South Island to make it happen. It was great to see Mr Vannoort, Mr Barlow and Mr Utting on the sideline supporting all our teams – a great way to finish the winter season!
