Pipehenge

MGS —

This term Year 9 Science classes...

...have been studying astronomy via the use of Pipehenge. Pipehenge is a climbing frame situated outside the Science Laboratories however, it is also a walk-in sundial, calendar, and observatory. Pipehenge was originally designed and installed by Eric Jackson and John Dunlop many years ago and is used every day by students as a climbing frame during morning tea and lunchtimes.

James Harris together with the science teaching team, have recently reinstituted its use for an exciting practical lesson of solar proportions. With the guidance of science teachers, a backboard dial and some magnetic labels, students can predict time using the position of the sun and determine constellation positioning based on the lines and grid construct of the frame. An epic amalgamation of engineering and science, Pipehenge is an amazing tool that encourages students to look up and marvel at our Lord’s magnificent creation.
