Year 7 Trip

MGS —

Recently the Year 7's visited the Materials Recovery Facility and the EcoShop. This is part of their learning on Waste Management.

On Monday the 13th of August 7LD went to three different eco areas. In the first place, the materials recovery facility, we learnt about what happens to recycling. First the recycling gets picked up by a big recycling truck, then it gets taken to a place called the materials recovery facility (the first place we went to.) Then the recycling gets put in a room called contamination room, and that is where a few very experienced people take out all the rubbish that’s not supposed to be there. The people who do that do it for about eight hours, it would be very smelly and extremely hot in there in summer time, it is also very dangerous too. They do a great job. After that the recycling goes through lots of machines that separates the soft plastics, the cardboard, the newspapers and the hard plastics. One machine that interests me is the perforator. The perforator pokes holes into milk bottles, in case they have lids on them and if they have lids on them they would be harder to squash. The waste management trip taught me a lot and now I know not to put the milk bottle lids on the milk bottles when I put them in the recycling bin. I definitely recommend visiting the three eco places.
