Kaikoura Adventure Race and South Island Secondary Schools’ Champs

MGS —

Our senior adventure racing team competed in the 12 hour Adventure Race at Kaikoura on 25th April.

The team was made up with Emilio Kennedy, Jasper Lonsdale, Tristan Bennett, Oscar Prince.

The course was based on farmland on either side of the Inland Road and around the Kahutara River. It was a very hilly and challenging course where fitness and good navigational skills were essential.

The last part of the event took place after dark, so the boys had over three hours of night navigation in steep, bush-clad terrain to contend with.

An additional feature of the course was an abseil which one team ember had to complete.

Thirteen Secondary Schools took part, with Cashmere High School winning the Secondary Schools’ section, and finding all the checkpoints in well under 12 hours! The Middleton Grange Geckos scored 3000 points out of a possible 3900.

Also competing in the 12-hour event was Mr Thompson who works in our Primary School. ‘Team Thompson’ scored 3600 points out of a possible 4200 points and were placed 27th out of the 63 teams who competed in the 12-hour event.

It was a fun day on a very challenging course with our Middleton crew feeling totally exhausted at the end. We would like to thank James Lonsdale for providing transport, supervision and support for our team at Kaikoura.
