Ruma Iwa are learning...

...about life in 1850 in Otautahi Christchurch. We are comparing life "Then and Now". As part of our learning about clothing and fibres, Mrs Mckie brought her Grandmother's spinning wheel to school. We divided our class into two groups one group spent some time outside under a tree learning about how a spinning wheel works and twisting sheep fibre into a thread. The other group was inside learning to thread a needle and sew hessian bags with Mrs Prior our student teacher from Laidlaw College.

Interesting fact.

Did you know that the spinning wheel was invented around 500 AD in India? That is a really long time ago.
