The Fridge - 88.3FM

MGSJune 12, 2023

"The Fridge" is Middleton's own radio station - so named because it's cool, fresh, and keeps things good. Sixty students are on air during school days and the show keeps rolling 24/7. You'll find Scripture, clean classics, and Christian hits to build faith, speak truth, and bring joy. News each hour and quiet vibes to chill to overnight, plus Bible teaching at 7am and 7pm. And no ads.
You'll find The Fridge in your car on 88.3FM around Christchurch, or online - search "the fridge radio." We're also on air in Gore and Wanaka, and hope to cover Hamilton, Oamaru, and Te Anau this year.
Rhema Media help us by sharing their Port Hills transmission site. They also invited a group of students to their Auckland studios for two days. It was a rich time of inspiration and broadcast experience.
Last year our radio student leader won a Christian Broadcasting Association scholarship to network with other Christians in media and to study at Broadcasting School.
Radio Lollipop, a children's hospital charity, very kindly donated us their mobile studio, now emblazoned with The Fridge logo. This gives us a community presence, doubles the number of students we can train, and gives us the ability to broadcast from anywhere.

The Fridge broadcasts live, non-stop, over the 40 Hour Famine weekend. Last year, World Vision awarded The Fridge their Advocacy Award for raising funds and awareness for disease-free water in developing countries.

Apart from the fun that the students have, The Fridge gives them the opportunity to be discerning in their choice of music and what they say. We run everything past Philippians 4:8, whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy – think on these things.
We hope that The Fridge is Middleton's gift to the wider community. Why not listen, and if you like what you hear, spread the word?
A few projects that we would like to work on:

  • Bringing The Fridge to each new town requires a transmitter ($850), antenna ($350) and internet codec ($250)
  • Developing journalism for good news takes time, as does training hosts to interview Bible colleges, pastors and mission groups. Releasing staff from other curriculum areas to strategically equip students for these tasks will cost around $17 000 for a year and train sixty students. Some of these may serve in Christian media, some as salt and light in secular broadcasting.
  • Our transmitters use "low power" frequencies which give limited coverage, only heard by car radios near town. We have the opportunity for The Fridge to use a full-power FM frequency to cover Canterbury each summer. We are negotiating the price but it would be thousands of dollars.
  • There is the possibility of a second network to simply broadcast The Bible, read by student voices.
