Kate Pickworth

Graduated 2012

I graduated from Middleton Grange High School in 2012, which is where my love history was fostered under the fantastic teaching of Jane Ellis. I went onto study history at the University of Canterbury where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in 2016 and a Master of Arts with Distinction in 2019. I served on the Canterbury Historical Association committee for six years and am passionate about connecting the local community with history. I have also tutored for the University of Canterbury History Department for the past two years and love helping undergraduate students engage in historical discussions. Currently, I am attending the University of Oxford as the Edward Gibbon Wakefield Scholar as a part of my Doctor of Philosophy. Here, I am analysing women’s roles in creating propaganda in Britain during the First World War.

The 'Wakefield' Recognised Student Scholarships have been for UofC students to spend one academic year in Oxford as part of their UofC Ph.D. course. However, the limitation of the status of Recognised Student has been that one does not receive an Oxford University degree at the end of one's study, nor is one on a structured course, but simply more-or-less doing one's own private study in Oxford towards a degree at another institution. At the end of last year, it was decided that the level of endowment had been reached in order to allow for the transformation of the 'Wakefield' Recognised Student Scholarship into a scholarship for a Master's Course Degree from the University of Oxford, making the scholarship significantly more prestigious. Over the last twelve years, the income from the Wakefield Scholarship endowment has nevertheless allowed for the awarding of five Recognised Student scholarships. The fifth and final Wakefield Recognised Student scholar is your alumni, Kate Pickworth. She will spend the 2022/23 academic year in Oxford carrying out research for her Ph.D. at Canterbury.
