Maori Language Week

MGSSeptember 19, 2023

On the 14th September...

...at 12.00pm the Primary School, with a few Middle School students, met together outside the whare to celebrate learning Te reo Maori in schools and in our communities. On this day in 1972, 51 years ago, a petition was presented to the NZ Parliament asking for Te reo Maori and Maori culture, tikanga, to be taught in schools. 30,000 people had signed the petition to say they agreed with the request. This was a significant moment in our history, and in remembering it, we joined with people all around Aotearoa as we gathered to korero Māori and celebrate Te wā tuku reo Māori. Kia kaha te reo Māori.
