National Poetry Day in Lockdown

Ellen von Collas —

21 August was the unofficial National Poetry Day in New Zealand. Since we were all in Lockdown, Room 19 children were invited to share a favourite poem or write their own. Here are some original works:

From the perspective of a new-born rabbit:
My eyes are closed and I make a little squeak
What is this I’m lying on?
I hear a click
I am born
The smells are fresh
Warm sun on my back
My picture is done
For my new family
Guess who it is?

You are My Baby Brother
My baby brother is cute like a little fluffy puppy.
When he wants something he shows me his biggest googly eyes and says, 'Please'
Whenever I need a hug he snuggles up to me
like my comfiest blanket and warms my heart
My baby brother is like a parrot and copies what I say and what I do.
But sometimes my baby brother can be a stubborn business man,
and say my way or no way.
My baby brother is the world funniest clown who has many silly faces
and shows me to cheer me up.
My baby brother is a magician with biggest imagination
Together we climb the tallest cushion mountains
We plunge from the toybox into the deepest ocean
We can be both villains and heroes with super powers.
I love how we can be anything we want and go anywhere we dare to go.
This is why I love my little baby brother.

While I was swinging
I heard a bird singing
I looked up high in the sky
The bird was about to fly
I was enjoying the weather
When I found a bird’s feather
It was a nice time to see
The birds flapping together.

A male whale
A bold blue male whale
Set out to sail,
Across the deep blue sea.
He swished his tail,
He did not fail.
He’s strong and brave
like me.

wind swirls
rain twirls
spring rain
can be a pain
but suns bright
lots of light
flower buds cream and pink
maybe springs not bad I think
