Milford Ski Team

Paula Snowball —

Despite the warm weather, we are seeking keen and experienced skiers to join the Milford ski team. The Milford School ski team competes annually in late August at the North Island Primary School (NIPS) Champs at Mt. Ruapehu.

It is a Slalom skiing event and children engage in a combination of their own training and we have a coach up at Snowplanet who helps us train and get ready for it. Training at Snowplanet is done during school time during Term 3 for around 3 Monday afternoons from 1.30pm - 3pm (we have dialled this back from previous years as we recognise that children are busy and it’s also disruptive at school). NIPS is run over 3 - 4 days during Term 3, and we book team accommodation at the mountain (location and details are TBC). A skiing parent needs to accompany their child for this trip and may also be required to be course assistants. Children don't need to have ski racing experience but do need to be competent blue run mountain skiers.

The focus is on having a fun and enjoyable NIPS and for the kids to meet other like minded adventurous children. That said, last year Milford School came 4th out of over 100 schools participating from all over the North Island and we are keen to let keen children shine again.

We will hold trials to select teams as required. In previous years we have had either one or two teams (with up to 5 skiers in each) made up of juniors (Year 2/3/4) and seniors (Year 5/6), with a mix of boys and girls. All costs and transport (including up to the mountain each day) are the responsibility of the parents. If you have any questions or want to find out more about this awesome experience please email Danie Meikle who is managing the team meikle.daniel@gmail.com or see Paula Snowball in the Hive.
