Māori Language Week

Louise Lavulo —

Tēnā koutou e te kura whānau! Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) was a successful and fun time with our Milford Kura ākonga (students). In a variety of ways, our kaiako and tamariki participated in Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori (Māori Language Moment) that happened on Tuesday at 12pm. This is a significant moment in Aotearoa's history because it marks the day and hour that the Māori Language petition was delivered to parliament back in 1972 calling for courses in Māori language and culture to be offered in New Zealand schools.

Some examples of how our kura celebrated this week were waiata (song), pānui (reading), whakarongo (listening), pikitia (pictures) put into house windows, kanikani (dancing), hui (meeting), kōrero (talking), Reo bots, puoro (music), whakapakari tinana (fitness), and obviously a lot of whakaaro (thinking) happening in this beautiful language. There have been so many wonderful posts of children's mahi (work) where their whānau are also getting involved to learn or speak Te Reo Māori.

Check out some of Te Wā (the moments) that have been uploaded to the Reomāori website

We look forward to continuing our momentum with the teaching and learning to keep the language strong- Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori!

If you are wanting to have a go at a Te Reo Māori quiz game (kēmu patapatai) that is listed on Quizziz, here are the links that are open for a few more days. No matter how you score, you'll be able to learn some new kupu (words) and see what sorts of things your tamariki are learning. Karawhiua! (Go for it!)
