Principal's Message - Literacy Whānau Evening 2024: A Summary

Lucy Naylor —

On June 5th, we held our Literacy Whānau Evening to foster an understanding of our structured literacy approach and how parents can support their children's literacy development at home.

Structured Literacy, involving explicit and deliberate acts of teaching, has been embedded in Milford's curriculum for five years, with all teachers in Y0-2 and many in older year levels, as well as some Learning Assistants, trained in this approach.

The structured literacy approach is the 'science of learning' in action; it focuses on how children learn and provides a research-based, highly effective teaching approach. This method ensures consistency in the quality of education delivery across the school, requiring a deep understanding of the learner and the adaptability to personalise the approach to every student's needs.

Structured Literacy lessons are systematic, following a logical, step-by-step order; explicit, with teachers clearly explaining concepts like letter sounds and word decoding; and involve regular, consistent practice to develop strong reading skills.

Early engagement is one of the most powerful tools in a child's literacy development, and parents play a crucial role. Children frequently engage in early literacy activities with their parents, significantly improving their reading. Remember, reading should be enjoyable—encourage your child to read aloud, discuss what they've read, and explore topics that interest them.

In the evening, we shared how you can help at home; we hope you find this leaflet helpful - Literacy; How to help at home.

Thank you to all the parents who attended and for your continued support in prioritising Literacy at home. Together, we can ensure our children develop the skills they need to become confident and proficient readers and writers.

Matariki: A Celebration of Togetherness and New Beginnings - 26 June at 7.45am

You are invited to our Matariki Celebration and Breakfast, which will take place on the Waterwise Jetty.

As the winter nights grow longer, New Zealanders come together to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year. One of the key events during this festive season is the Matariki Celebration and Breakfast, which celebrates unity, new beginnings and the spirit of community. It is a time to gather early in the morning to share a meal and celebrate the rising of the Pleiades star cluster, Matatiki. It represents renewal, transformation and fresh starts. So, let us embrace the spirit of Matariki and use this celebration to foster togetherness, gratitude, and new beginnings in our lives and community!

If you are celebrating with us, please complete the RSVP for catering purposes - Matariki Breakfast. Please bring a few coins to the event for a koha.
