TE WIKI O TE REO MĀORI (Māori Language Week)

Louise Lavulo —

Last week was Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week). This saw our kura experiencing this in many ways on top of what wonderful integration we already have here at Milford School. Ngā mhi to everyone that gave Te Reo Māori a boost. Hopefully you all managed to pick up some new kupu (words) throughout te wiki (the week).

How we explored in Specialist classes:

  • Tuakana-teina in PE where the Year 5 & 6 ākonga (students) taught some traditional Māori kēmu (games) and waiata-a-ringa (hand actions) to younger students.
  • Learning about how Māori utilise Te Taiao (nature) for many resources in STEM. Use of waiata (songs) and pukapuka (books) in Music.
  • In French, the Year 5s were learning kupu (words) for kai (kai) in French and Te Reo Māori, then in each language, exploring how many of each food item.
  • In Year levels: whakatauki (proverbs), karakia, waiata, Kahoot quizzes, maths problem solving & family of facts using Te Reo, taniwha & manu art, mihi, pepeha, responses to 'kei te pēhea koe?' (how are you?), reading the karaka (clock), explored pakiwaitara (legends), weaving, rākau (stick) games, kapa haka, and even dual language pukapuka that were shared with whānau.

Kia pai te wīkene! (Have a good weekend!) Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori! (Keep Māori language strong!).
