Lockdown Learning in Year 3

Ellen von Collas —

The Year 3 students have been doing some amazing learning during lockdown. In Reading, they've been developing their fluency and inference skills. The children have been practising their skills at painting a picture in the reader's mind by creating some super sensory sentences. They've been developing their coding skills for orienteering, fraction knowledge and measurement skills. They're set to use those measurement skills and try out some baking too. I can't wait to see what's cooking in all your homes!

In response to Extra Yarn, a story by Mac Barnett, we had some heartwarming responses to the instruction: Draw things that are precious to you and tell us why you would not sell them. Flora's i-pad was precious to her "... because if I sell my i-pad I will never go to Zoom meeting again.". She would also not sell her cat or her sister. Phew! Deniz knows you can't sell your family, love, friendship, happiness, or a clean environment.

The children have been getting out and about, exploring their backyard and noticing the plants, birds and insects and other critters they can see. Some children have done a little extra research to find out more about some of those creatures. They've been bike riding, building forts and exploring their nearby parks and beaches.

In line with our unit of inquiry, How We Express Ourselves, we had some great responses to creating a cartoon, artwork, song or dance for what you've been doing in Lockdown. The children have also been practicing their te reo Maori language skills, as well as participating in so many of the exciting Specialist activities. Have a look at some of the pictures we have from our Lockdown Learning.
