Room 9 Report

Jessica Vader —

In Year 4 Distance Learning, we have been practising a writing technique called "Show, don't tell" "Show, don’t tell" is a technique authors use to help the reader visualise and clearly experience what is happening in the story, or how a character is feeling.

One way to use “Show, don’t tell” is to include the 5 senses to describe what is happening, so that the reader can better imagine what is going on.

Here is a show, don't tell piece of writing by Julie in Room 9:

The engine gave a loud rumble, the dirt bike seemed to be whispering "ride on me". His helmet felt just perfect on his head. His uniform felt cozy and warm. When he sat on the bike there was a feeling of happiness. When he started to ride it he could hear the wind, racing to catch up. He also heard the engine’s continuing whirring sounds. Then he saw a little sand hill and he started to panic, but before he could pull the brakes his dirt bike leaped over it with him clinging onto the handles! Then it did a perfect landing on to the ground. Dirt and sand flew in every direction blocking his eyesight. He could taste the sand and dirt in his mouth. At last, he decided to get off his dirt bike, he didn’t miss his bike because he was going back dirt biking the next week.
