Whanau Harakeke's Christmas Maths Game

Emma Downie —

Whanau Harakeke have been getting into the Christmas spirit with this week's maths game, a festive twist on the classic Snakes and Ladders!

This fun game helps reinforce important mathematical skills like number recognition, counting, and turn-taking.

Maths Skills:

  • Counting: The game involves counting squares as players move their pieces. For younger children, counting each square can reinforce basic counting skills. For older children, you can introduce addition and subtraction by having them add or subtract the numbers they roll on the dice from their current position.

  • Probability: Discussing the likelihood of landing on a ladder versus a snake can introduce concepts of probability. For example, you could ask questions like, “What are the chances of rolling a number that will land you on a ladder?” This introduces basic probability concepts in a fun and engaging way.

Beyond Maths:

  • Strategy and Decision Making: Children can learn to make strategic decisions about which path to take based on the location of the snakes and ladders on the board. This teaches critical thinking and decision-making skills.

  • Social Skills: Playing the game with others fosters social interaction, cooperation, and sportsmanship. It provides an opportunity for children to learn how to take turns, follow rules, and interact with peers.

  • Emotional Regulation: Since the game involves both advancement (ladders) and setbacks (snakes), it can help children learn to cope with both success and failure in a controlled environment. This aids in developing emotional regulation skills.

Our tamariki have been having a blast playing this game as part of their morning routines, and the fun will continue next week during our Learning through Play sessions.
