BYOD is coming to Milford School!

Nicola Hewitt —

We are always looking for ways to enhance our students' digital learning experiences to provide them with the best possible learning environment.

While we have invested significantly in Chromebooks for our Year 2-6 students over the past few years, we're excited to announce that Year 6 will transition to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program starting Term 1, 2025.

This change will ensure our Year 6 students are well-prepared for the digital demands of intermediate school and allow them to develop essential 21st-century skills, access personalised learning opportunities, and engage with the curriculum more meaningfully. Furthermore, sustaining the current 1:1 Chromebook program is becoming increasingly challenging due to the rising costs of leasing, purchasing, and maintaining school devices. Transitioning to BYOD will allow us to allocate resources more effectively to benefit all students. Please be assured that while students bring their own devices, this doesn’t increase the frequency of device use; our teachers will continue running a balanced learning programme.

This means that from Term 1 2025, Year 6 (currently Year 5) students will be asked to 'Bring Your Own Device' to school for learning activities.

Also note that;

  • From 2026, Year 5 (currently Year 4) students will also be allowed to bring their devices to school.

  • While we encourage students to bring their own devices, there will be a few Chromebooks for class use.

Why BYOD?

  • Sustainability: BYOD allows us to allocate resources more effectively, ensuring ongoing investment in other essential areas such as learning resources, specialist teachers, learning assistants, etc.

  • Responsibility and Digital Citizenship: Owning their device encourages students to take responsibility for their learning tools and develop good digital citizenship practices.

  • Parent information sessions: We will hold information sessions to answer your questions on November 15th from 8:30 to 9 am in the staffroom.

We are confident our shift to BYOD will enable us to continue providing a high-quality digital learning experience for all students while ensuring the long-term sustainability of our resources.  If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.
