Year 3 Korowai

Ellen von Collas —

Way back in July the Year 3 students celebrated Matariki by participating in a range of activities across the four classrooms. One activity was to decorate a feather to create our very own Year 3 Korowai. Each feather is the unique expression of the individual who decorated it. A korowai is the name for a Māori cloak. It is worn as a mantle of prestige and honor. Everyone has different reasons for wearing a korowai. For us, it is a collaborative artwork, celebrating our unity as a Year 3 community.

Mrs von Collas put the korowai together over lockdown. Last week was the first opportunity we've had to share the completed cloak and we had some children from Room 19 to model it for us. Mrs von Collas is hoping that more children from Year 3 will decorate feathers to add to the cloak in these last few weeks of the year.
