Pupuke Kāhui Ako - Year 2 and Year 13 Interaction

Paula Snowball —

The Year 2 team were fortunate to have some Year 13 Social Studies students from Westlake Girls High School visit us on Monday. The girls ran some activities and did presentations about different social and environmental issues. Our children loved the opportunity to interact with the older students and share their own thinking around the issues.

The girls taught us about penguins and seals. I learned there are not many seals and penguins in the world. If we stop littering they might not die.

The Westlake Girls told us about the rubbish affecting the turtles. The turtles are dying because they eat the plastic bags. If we pick up rubbish and put it in the bin then the turtles wont die.

We learned to not use many palm oils because they cut the trees down to get the palm oil. Then the animals that live in those trees can die. They need trees to get to places and it it their home. The girls took a photograph of us and they are going to put it on the Westlake Girls wall so they can remember to not use many palm oils.

The Westlake Girls talked to us about palm oil. It is not good because they cut down trees in the rainforest. The trees help us breathe. We learned not use palm oil. We wont buy Oreos and other products with it in.
