Room 17's dream cloth

Iris Leng —

The Year 1 students have started a new Unit of Inquiry this term, called "How We Express Ourselves". This inquiry focuses on understanding different feelings and how feelings can be expressed and experienced through the arts.

Room 17 started exploring this topic by looking at a story of a little girl who had accidentally torn her cloth of dreams. We discussed how she would have felt at the time, and what happens if a dream cloth is torn. Room 17 tamariki had many ideas:

"The dreams will all escape", "She may not be able to dream again"... We then started creating our own dream cloth that we could lend the little girl. Room 17 poured out their creativity onto the piece of cloth with their own dreams that brought them happiness, excitement, and many different feelings.

In the following week, Room 17 created a recipe for a magical thread to fix the broken dream cloth for the little girl. We all signed up to be dream-makers and brainstormed the different ingredients that were needed for this thread. Each ingredient also had special instructions, some needed three people, while others were so heavy that they required the whole class to drag them into the mixing bowl. We have all enjoyed this creative process and feel very proud of ourselves as 'dream-makers'.
