Pāraerae Harakeke - Flax Sandals
In the holidays, Mrs von Collas attended a Māori weaving workshop where she learned how to weave Māori pāraerae (sandals) using harakeke (flax). She learned that before Europeans arrived in New Zealand, Māori would have woven these temporary sandals to protect their feet, especially when collecting kaimoana (shellfish) on the rocky shore.
We think they look really cool and many of us tried them on.
I liked the look of the sandals – Natalie.
I’ve never worn sandals before so I thought they looked pretty cool. – Leo
The sandals were comfortable and great. – Riley
There is a lot of work involved in making these sandals, but perhaps Mrs von Collas will teach us how to make them one day. Can you guess whose feet are in the photo?
