Learning Through Play - Year 0/1

Beverley Smith —

Every Monday and Wednesday afternoon, all the Year 0 and 1 classes get together to engage in Learning Through Play. There are many different types of play, and each week a different form of play is explored.

One of the types of play is Books and Storytelling. Books and storytelling provide children with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to use complex symbol systems that make up our society – the written word, visual images and oral communications – for a range of purposes. Reading, writing, listening, and talking, form the basis of children’s literacy learning. Children need lots of language together with a wide variety of experiences. Sharing books and reading is a vital activity for children’s development. Children who experience and enjoy reading books with others develop a positive attitude towards books. This will help them when they learn to read.

This week, the Year 0/1 students were able to read and listen to stories in a variety of ways. The students also had oppportunities to make their own mini books. Books and storytelling not only provide fun and enjoyment, but also provide great opportunities for children to talk about their experiences and emotions.
