Year 5 & 6 Water Safety Sessions

Michelle Clark —

Our Year 5 & 6 children were lucky to take part in an informative, fun and practical water safety session with the team from AUT Millennium this week. During the theory session, the children learnt the importance of wearing a life jacket and how to look after themselves and others at the beach, including the best equipment to assist a rescue.

This was followed by a practical session in the pool where they learnt to exit a boat scuba-style and re-enter a boat while in the water, swim the three survival strokes (breaststroke, doggie paddle & back kicking) to keep their limbs under the water to maintain body warmth. They also practiced the HELP position and learnt how to swim together in a link and chain formations for safety in open water.
