International Baccalaureate, Primary Years Programme (IB PYP)

Sara Baker —

As you will know, Milford School is a candidate school for the IBPYP. We have been learning about this framework which sits well with our New Zealand Curriculum, and we would like to give parents information as well.

The Learner Profile provides a framework for all students to strive towards. The aim of the IBPYP is to develop internationally minded people who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

As IB learners we strive to be: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-Minded, Caring, Risk-Takers, Balanced and Reflective.

This week, I have spoken to two lovely Year 1 learners who explained to me what being Caring and Principled meant to them. Harper and Olivia were able to explain the attributes in the context of their own lives.

Principled - “This means making the right choices when no one is looking as well as when someone is looking. We can do this every day, for example, you can say to other children that they can play with you even when the teacher isn’t there.”

Caring - “this means caring about people and other children and yourself, and the teachers and everyone! This means being nice with our words, and you think about your words before you say them. We could be friendly to someone who is upset and invite them to play.” Congratulations Olivia and Harper, you are well on the way to achieving the IB aim!
