Principal's Message - Learning is Fun: A Parent's Guide

Nicola Hewitt —

Learning doesn’t have to be confined to the classroom. Every day offers opportunities for exciting and educational experiences. From the great outdoors to the kitchen table, a world of discovery is waiting.

Nicola Hewitt — August 9, 2024

When learning is fun, students are more engaged and motivated and retain information better. This leads to increased confidence, higher academic achievement, and a lifelong love of learning.

Our teachers work hard to create fun and engaging learning environments that inspire curiosity, foster critical thinking, and empower students to become lifelong learners. As whānau, you can do this as well. The following are a few tips and ideas.

How Parents Can Help

  • Show Enthusiasm: Your excitement about learning is contagious. Share your interests and passions with your child.

  • Ask Questions: Encourage curiosity by asking open-ended questions. This helps children think critically and express their ideas.

  • Limit Screen Time: Balance technology with hands-on activities. Too much screen time can hinder development.

  • Make Learning a Priority: Create a learning-friendly environment at home. Set aside time for reading, puzzles, or experiments.

  • Praise Effort: Focus on the process, not just the outcome. Celebrate your child’s attempts and perseverance.

Making Learning Fun

  • Explore Nature: A walk in the park can turn into a science lesson. Observe insects, identify trees, or collect leaves to press.

  • Cook and Bake: Measuring, mixing, and following instructions are essential life skills. Involve kids in meal preparation for hands-on learning.

  • Read Aloud: Sharing stories sparks imagination and builds vocabulary. Discuss characters, plot, and illustrations together.

  • Get Creative: Art and crafts encourage problem-solving and self-expression. Provide a variety of materials and let their creativity flow.

  • Play Games: Board games, card games, and puzzles develop critical thinking, strategy, and cooperation.

Learning is a journey, not a race. You’re setting your child up for a lifetime of curiosity and discovery by making it fun and engaging.

We had a wonderful day dressing up as our favourite Olympic athletes and eating our sausages! Thank you for supporting our Year 6 fundraiser!

Finally, next week, we celebrate all things mathematics with 'Maths Week. ' Keep an eye out for the activities your child will be bringing home.

He nui ake tō mātou mana i te kura anahe - We are more than just a school!
