STEM: Sound

Morgan McKeen —

In our recent STEM classes, students have been diving into the world of sound and vibrations. We began by observing how particles vibrate to create sound, using spoons tied to strings as a simple demonstration. We were amazed at how the sound changed when we banged the spoons together using different methods!

Following this, students got creative with water xylophones, learning how water levels affect pitch. They added varying amounts of water to glasses and then used a pencil as a ‘beater’ to make different-pitched sounds.

This week, some classes explored how animals hear and even designed their own animal ears! We loved learning about how animals have developed specialised hearing to help them hear predators and navigate!
