Gardening Club News 🥒🥗

Jillian Sommers and Ellen von Collas —

Towards the end of last year we planted a whole lot of vegetable seedlings. Over the summer, some of those plants grew really big. Piper Davis and her dad, Brook, helped water the gardens over the long holiday and they spotted a zucchini that had grown so big it had become a marrow, which, together with several keen Gardening Club members, they enjoyed as zucchini fritters.

When we spotted another large zucchini growing this week, we decided to try out Piper's recipe during Gardening Club. On Wednesday, Mina and Phoebe from the Hive, helped Mrs Sommers to harvest the zucchini. On Thursday we all gathered in the Hive, with keen helpers ready to grate the zucchini, potatoes and cheese to go into the fritter mix. Imagine our surprise when the 'zucchini' turned out to be a really tasty cucumber! Even the teachers are still learning to identify some of our vegetables. At least we know for next time.

Luckily we had few spare zucchini with which to make our fritters, which went down a treat, along with a little side salad of cucumber and rocket. "They were delicious!" said Sophia. "I wanted a fourth" cried Madeleine. "I wanted just one" cried Mrs von Collas, who cooked but didn't get a chance to taste them until much later in the day. "Mmmmm!"

Back in the garden we are still waiting patiently for our pumpkins and carrots to ripen fully before we can harvest them. I wonder what we can make with them?
