The Student Kaiārahi Visit the Give a Kid a Blanket Headquarters!

Nicola Hewitt —

On Thursday the student Kaiārahi went to Henderson to Give a Kid a Blanket. This is a charity for the children who are less fortunate than us. Bernie (the organizer) walked us through their warehouse and explained how the organization works. All the different rooms had a purpose like the bedding room, the baby room, and the PJ room. We learned a lot but the biggest thing was how grateful we felt to have our own beds and not to have to share a bed with our siblings to keep warm.

We also met with police officers and social workers that go out and distribute the packages 'Give a Kid a Blanket' put together.  These people work in the poorest parts of our Auckland Community.

Following are some other important information, facts and learning we wanted to share are:

  • Give a Kid a Blanket are short of PJ’s for teenagers.
  • 'Give a Kid a Blanket' distribute more than just blankets - they give bedding packages that include sheets, pillows, duvets, and duvet covers. They give warm clothes packages like for babies from 0-3 months.
  • We were all shocked by the number of people needing help.
  • The bigger the blanket better!  Kids share beds!
  • People donate good quality things.
  • We were shocked how much money 'Give a Kid a Blanket' had to spend on bedding last year, it was $23,000 and in 2019 they only had to spend $4000.
  • Makes us think how fortunate we are to have a roof over our heads and our own rooms.
  • Even a small donation is helpful!
  • This is our chance to help! We are the young leaders of New Zealand!

Thank you for supporting the charity!
