Year 2 Visit Ambury Park Farm

Paula Snowball —

On Wednesday the Year 2 classes visited Ambury Park Farm. A great time was had by all. There were pigs to pat, goats to feed, sheep and cows to stroke and hens to cluck over. We watched some cows get milked and observed a sheep being sheared.

Stomp, stomp! We went into the sharing shed.
"Eeewe, it smells like fresh poo and wool. It looks like a sheep farm with only sheep.""Farmer Sarah, why is it so smelly?""It's because of the sheep.""What, the sheep! But where are the sheep?""They are behind that rattling door. I will tell you about the sheep. Did you know that sheep don't wipe their bottoms?"

Yes!! Now we can go into the shearing shed. I bet it's not smelly! I went inside, it turned out even more smelly!"This place is even more stinky," I said.Sarah showed us a picture of poop stuck to a sheep's butt and creepy maggots. She told us there's a fly which likes poop, then lays eggs and after it hatches, it eats meat and the sheep gets blood poisoned. After, we got to see a cute sheep getting sheared. After it got sheared it went down the sheep slide. Our only way to get out was to go down the sheep slide. I did not want to go down it because lots of sheep go down there. Then Sarah said that we were going down a clean one. Yippee I said when I slid down.

As we walked into the stinky shearing shed I saw bags of wool. I didn't know what we were going to do with bags of wool. We sat down to listen to Sara who worked at the farm. She talked to us about flies and maggots. I was really interested in it. Sara taught us about fly maggots and what they eat. She told us that maggots eat meat and sheep can get very sick and die. I did not know about these things so it was interesting.

When I first stepped into the shearing shed it smelled yucky. It smelt like brown pooy, oily sheep's wool. When we finally sat down the people that worked there told us about the sheep and the maggots. At last we were going to see a lamb get the wool shaved off.
