Year 5 and 6 Water Safety
On the 26 of February the AUT Millennium coaches came to Milford School in the morning. We talked about water safety.
They showed us the 'WET' phrase and what it means. The W means weather. It is always good to check the weather before heading out to the beach. The E stands for equipment like a life jacket, a radio and knowing how to dial channel 16. Channel 16 is the marine help signal just like 111 but quicker for marine. You could also have but not need a signal to contact. The T stands for telling someone when you go on a boat or scuba diving or something out in the ocean, tell someone and tell them the time you are coming back it is important so someone will look for you if you're not back on time.
Then they showed us the help position is when you cross your arms and cross your legs and don’t move or you will get cold. Then we headed to the pool. First Room 5 went then Room 6 and finally Room 7. When we first got there so many life jackets were lying on the ground. The safety instructions were zip and buckle, hand under the strap to check if tight and lastly thumbs under shoulder straps to see if it's too big or too small that was how we put them on they were cold and soggy. Then half the class went to the inflatable boat and the other half went in the water.
Once we were in the pool we tried the 3 safety swims with life jackets. 1 is doggy paddles, 2 is safety backstroke you cross your arm and kick lightly, and 3 is breaststroke. Then we went in a chain and swam across the pool. After that we tried some shapes to float, first was a T then an I shape, even though it was hard to keep our heads above the water. Then, a Y, and the easiest one is a star. After that, we went to the boat we all slowly got in.
There were 7 people on a boat, and then they pushed us out into the pool. We sat on the edge and they counted 321 scuba! As soon as they said scuba we fell backwards and our body weight pulled us down into the water. We stayed in our help position for a minute then one person climbed up and then we pulled the next one up by the life jacket then each person took a strap on their life jacket then one hopped out then once everyone was up, they pulled us back to the wall and we went into a huddle we put both arms around our wastes and one went in the middle after being in there for about 30 seconds we started to warm up.
It was fun!
