Year 4 Matariki Celebration

Charlotte Barrance —

Matariki is the Māori name for a star constellation that rises up into the southern skies in mid-winter. This signals an important time in the New Zealand calendar - the Māori New Year. Matariki is seen as a time to reflect on the year past and look to the future as a time for growth and change.

On Wednesday, July 1st, Year 4 students celebrated Matariki 2020 with a Fish and Chips hākari ( feast). We listened to waiata and said a karakia to give thanks for the Māori New Year, being together, and our wonderful feast.

On Thursday we followed up the Hākari with a full day of Matariki arts and crafts. What a way to celebrate this special time of the year.Kia pai tou tatou Matariki | Happy Matariki (Maori New Year) everyone!
