Water Safety Programme Report - Water safety at the beach

Emily & Violet Rm 3 —

Water safety is crucial when you are at the beach. The year sixes have gone to the pool and completed some emergencies that might happen at the beach. The instructors from AUT Millennium came to our Year 6 hui and explained what to do if you find yourself in an emergency and you cannot get to your boat.

Remember, the ocean can be unpredictable, so it's always important to be cautious and stay aware of your surroundings. If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to ask a lifeguard for advice or assistance. During our year 6 hui, Liz and Julie taught us some important skills such as the three ways to check that your lifejacket is fastened properly: Listen for the two clicks for the two clips, check that only your fingers can fit through the strap and lift the shoulders so that only a little can rise.

They also taught us the three survival strokes, (if ever in danger): doggy paddle, breath stroke and survival backstroke. All of these keep your arms underwater so that you do not lose heat through them, meanwhile your head is above water, so you don’t get dizzy or out of breath.

We also did the practical session in the pool. We learned what to do if you have to quickly leave your boat and tipped off the edge of the lifeboats in the deep end.

The last thing that we did was practice the huddle for warmth, the link and the chain for movement altogether. These will help us with the injured, unwell or elderly, and will make us easy to spot.

It was really fun completing these activities in the pool, and hopefully we will remember these if in need.

Thank You.
