Korean Cultural Visit in Room 10

Charlotte Barrance —

새해 복 많이 받으세요 Saehae bog manh-i bad-euseyo. To celebrate Seollal (Korean New Year) on 12 February 2021, two Milford School families visited Room 10 and shared important aspects of their Korean culture with the class. This tied in with our Who We Are unit as we strive to learn more about each other and gain a deeper understanding of the special things that make up our identity.

Jung Ho Kim, Sion Kim’s father, led the class presentation. Yeunghun Oh, Lawrence Oh’s dad, also came and wore Hanbok (traditional costume) along with Sion and his younger brother. Mrs Palmer was also given a traditional dress to wear as a mark of the special occasion. The students were shown a Sebae (traditional New Year bow) usually given to elders and those that participated received a small gift in return. Some students took the opportunity to try a challenging game of Jegichagi, trying to keep a paper jegi (similar to a shuttlecock) in the air using the inside of the foot. All students had the chance to try rice cake soup and rice cakes, prepared and served by Ju Ra Jin, Sion’s mum.

What a rich and diverse country we are privileged to live in, with so many exciting cultures to learn about! Thanks to the Kim and Oh families who were so willing to give of their time and energy to share their culture with us. We look forward to learning more about the other cultures that make up our class over the rest of 2021.

감사합니다

Gamsahabnida!
