Room 7 - EOTC moments in time

by Michelle Clark

I stood on top of the dune, looking down at the huge beautiful beach. As I stood there looking at the massive waves I knew that we would have to get in. I was excited, but also super nervous. We got told to get in, crash! Splash! I heard these sounds when everyone was getting in. Yuck! The water splashed up into my mouth. As I touched the cold water, a waft of salt water went into my nose. It was fun! by Anushka

Gardening Club Update

by Ellen Von Collas

Children from across the school have been watching the leaf cuttings from Miss Brown's Golden Marble Queen Pothos plant grow roots during their STEM lessons. The cuttings' roots had grown really long and were ready to be potted up, so Miss Brown passed them on to Gardening Club members to pot up and take care of them. Thanks Miss Brown!

Year 1 Learning through play

by Beverley Smith

This week the Year 1 classes enjoyed Loose Parts Play outside on the field. Loose parts give children the freedom to arrange and rearrange, essentially using the materials to create and design their own 'toys'. This allows the focus of the play experience to be on the process rather than the product. Fine motor skills are developed and strengthened when children grasp and pick up small objects.

Room 11 Report

by Grant Arendse

As part of our "Who we are" unit, the students in Room 11 worked very well together to create this beautiful piece of collaborative art. It is a celebration of the diversity in our classroom and a reminder that even though we are all different, we also have a lot in common, and together we can achieve anything. In our classroom, everyone belongs and is accepted for who they are. You should be so proud of yourselves Room 11!

Coding competition

by Nicole Brown

Anyone interested in CODING - School Gen are running a Scratch competition where you could win some really cool robotics prizes. All you have to do is create a story, animation or game with a sailing theme. Entries must be in by Friday 16th April (end of Term 1). You will have to create an account not using your school email as you need to be able to share your project on Scratch so you will need a parent/caregiver’s email address. I’m happy to help with entries, come see me in the Pouaka Room anytime 😀 Miss Brown

Butterfly Tagging

by Jillian Sommers

The children in the Hive have been taking a keen interest in the monarch caterpillars we have been raising in our Butterfly House and helping to tag monarch butterflies for the Moths and Butterflies of N.Z Trust. The number on the butterfly's wing helps scientists track where monarchs fly to. If you spot a monarch with a tag on its wing, please go to the website listed on the tag and report the finding, giving the location the butterfly was found and the unique number on its tag. Alternatively, let the Hive know and we will report it for you. The website will generate a map of the place the butterfly was released and where it was found.

Calling all scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians – we need your help!

by Nicole Brown

Some of our students will be taking part in the Wonder Project Rocket Challenge in Term 2. It’s an amazing programme designed to get young Kiwis excited about STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The programme pairs STEM professionals with teachers to deliver the learning and we need more volunteers to help our children design, build and launch water rockets!
