Principal’s Message

by Sue Cattell

Kia ora koutou katoa. This week we have had our IB consultant visit. The IB allocates a consultant who helps us through the process of becoming an IBPYP school. Our consultant is head of a school in Sydney so the visit has been a remote one. They are usually face-to-face, but this year, all visits are held remotely due to travel restrictions. Zoom played a huge part in how he could have a window into our school and our learning journey. It has been a real joy to see our school through the eyes of someone with so much experience who knows what a good school looks like, but is new to our school. He has been sincerely impressed with the articulation of learning from the students, teachers, and parents he spoke with. He had a tour of the grounds (via Zoom) and even learned what a waiata was when he visited a year 4 class who had Whaea Keri at the time. A huge thank you to Sara Baker who leads the PYP learning and ensured we were ready for this stage in our journey.

JULY HOLIDAY RISK-TAKERS!

by Sara Baker

I have had more risk-taking students send in photos of their wonderful holidays this week. Reid showed his determination to be a risk-taker by parasailing behind a boat, snowboarding, horse riding, driving the luge and taking a ride in a semi submersible jet ski. Wow Reid, is there anything you can't do? What awesome photos, and what an awesome risk-taker!

Māra Koru - Koru Garden

by by Enviro Group

Thanks to everyone for supporting our mufti day on the last day of Term 2. We raised $685! This money is all going towards our new native garden, that we will be creating behind the hall and Pohutukawa building. This is a really exciting project. It will be a lovely, peaceful and quiet area for families to walk through. It will also be a great environment for learning about plants and our ecosystem. But, we can't do it by ourselves. We need your help please.

Westlake Girls' Environmental Presentations

by by Year 3

The Year 3 students have been very lucky to have presentations from Westlake Girls High School students over the past two weeks. Between our three classes we've had presentations on a variety of environmental issues facing us today. These presentations have included endangered penguins and sea lions, plastic pollution, and the impact of palm oil on our rainforests, endangering the lives of animals such as orangutans and tigers. Sophia was so inspired by the presentations, she went home to create this poster. We can all make choices that impact humans and our environment.

Celebrating 100 days at school 🎉

by Cara Gilmore

On Wednesday Room 16 and 17 celebrated our 100th day at school. We made crowns, shared food together, collected and played with 100 things, and wrote about what we would do if we had $100 to spend. We talked about how much our brains have grown in the 100 days we have been at school (including the days we spent learning at home). We had lots of fun and our teachers can't believe how smart we are now!

TAKING ACTION - THE HEART OF THE PYP!

by Sara Baker

I am also very proud of Year 1 student James, who is making incredible connections in his learning. James personified the ideal PYP student when he took ACTION when he saw a problem in his community! Ms Brereton writes, "At the end of the last unit in Year 1, we decided to do a school rubbish pick up to help protect the fish's resources (water). James has taken this message to heart and has done some of his own clean up in his own time." Tino pai James, you are definitely caring, principled and reflective, three of the wonderful Learner Profile Attributes.

Year 6 French - Hannah and Oscar, Room 3

by Admin

In French we have been learning about how people shop in France. For our project we made a Scratch animation of a market. We recorded our lines and then added them into our code. We had to take time out to make sure it was done correctly. See below for the link.

Mars Landers - Year 4 STEM

by Nicole Brown

In Year 4 this week we have been researching the work of EDL engineers who are responsible for the successful entry, descent and landing of the Mars rover for the Perseverance 2020 launch this week. We came up with a list of challenges our landers would have to overcome to land safely on the red planet, like temperature, speed and gravitational pull. We used a variety of materials to create a shock-absorbing vehicle that could safely land on Mars. Here are some of our efforts!

MUSIC NEWS 🎼

by Eugenie Middleton

It is always really exciting for Milford School music students to hear about other groups they can belong to in addition to Milford School music groups and also what groups they can aspire to be in when they get to High School. I had the privilege of meeting with the music specialist at Takapuna Normal Intermediate School on Tuesday. She is a wonderful music teacher. She told me all about her programme and the groups the students can belong to there. These are ukulele, rockband, jazzband, choir and orchestra.
