Principal’s Message

by Sue Cattell

Kia ora koutou katoa. What a fabulous week we are having with Our Week of Words! The guest authors we had visit, Vasanti Unka (author of books such as I am the Universe and Who stole the Rainbow?) and James Russell (Dragon Defenders series), were amazing and the students learned so much from them. The costs of having these authors come from the Activity Contribution most of you paid at the start of the year, so thank you for paying this.

Our Week of Words

by Nirelle Armstrong

Our Week of Words started off with a visit from Vasanti Unka. Vasanti is the author of Who Stole my Rainbow? along with many other titles. Our Year 1-3 children enjoyed listening to Vasasnti's story of how she became an author and illustrator. She shared key messages around the importance of imagination and that everyone can write the story that is inside them if they put their mind to it.

STEM Club - Baking Soda Rockets

by Nicole Brown

This week in STEM Club we have been manipulating different variables to launch a baking soda rocket! We used 1L bottles, tape, pencils, a cork, paper towels and vinegar. We learned that the chemical reaction created by the vinegar and baking soda inside the bottle creates a forceful stream of liquid that pushes out the cork and lifts the rocket into the air.

Mmmm Garlic!

by Ellen von Collas and Jillian Sommers

With last week's Gardening Club being a wet one, yesterday was the closest we could get to the shortest day of the year - the best time to plant garlic bulbs. After planting our bulbs for spring, we all helped to shake up some cream to turn it into butter, chop up the garlic and mix the two together to make garlic butter. A quick heat up of the french stick and we were able to spread our delicious butter on the warm bread and ... Mmmmm!

Inspired by Author

by by Room 19

The children in Year 3 enjoyed author Vassanti Unka's visit on Monday. Those who participated in her Writer's Workshop later in the day were inspired by her brainstorming and simple poem structure. Sophia was so inspired she went home and wrote her own poem. The rest of the children paired up to write cinquain poems, inspired by Our Week of Words. We hope you enjoy them.

Connecting to the Learner Profile in English Language Learning!

by Sara Baker

James and Yui came to see me to share their learning in Korean and English in connection with the PYP Learner Profile attributes. The research and thinking they have done in order to bring meaning in two languages to each of the attributes, and then to use a digital platform to illustrate and share their learning has been amazing! James and Yui created an illustrated poster for each of the attributes with definitions of each attribute in both English and Korean, which will be of great use to our future parents and students coming from Korea. Thank you Yui and James, and to Mrs S!
