In the past three weeks, we have received multiple communications from concerned parents and community members regarding the safety of our students cycling to and from school.
Concerning incidents have been reported, particularly at the Shakespeare Road/Kitchener Road and the Fenwick/Kitchener Road intersections. The incidents included students cycling recklessly and not stopping at the crossing, cycling across the road on an orange light and a group riding three abreast.
We share these incidents out of concern and want to reinforce the importance of road safety for all our students. Whether walking, biking, or scootering, our children must understand and practice safe road habits.
This is a timely reminder to talk to your child/ren about safe cycling and walking practices. Discuss routes, review traffic rules, and emphasise the importance of being patient and observant.
Look Both Ways: Always check for traffic before crossing any street, even at intersections.
Obey Traffic Signals: Teach children to understand and follow traffic lights and pedestrian signals.
Be Aware: Avoid distractions like phones or headphones when crossing roads.
Plan Safe Routes: Discuss safe routes to and from school with your children.
Wear Helmets: Helmets are essential for bike safety.
Thank you to the parents and members of the community who brought this matter to our attention.
