Kōwhai First Aid Workshop

Miramar North School —

Some key learning, linking to our Hauora learning.

Kowhai students had an amazing opportunity in the first week of term four to learn different skills from the St Johns Ambulance education team who visited. The students practised how to call 111 in a medical emergency and how to ask for the ambulance service. Hannah, an educator with St Johns Ambulance told the students about the questions the ambulance phone line team might ask them so that they could be prepared in advance (e.g. the child’s name and address, a rough estimate of the age of the patient and whether the patient was asleep or talking). The students were also given some important homework - to learn a parent's mobile phone number and their full home address (including the city name). During the session the students got hands-on experience, taking turns to put a buddy into the recovery position, learning how to wrap a bandage on a wound and finding out what general household items could be used for a bandage if they were unable to locate a first aid kit. It was an enriching learning experience for our tamariki to equip themselves with valuable life skills. Thank you for your generous koha contributions to the crew at St Johns Ambulance.
