The Design Process

Michelle Barnes —

In preparation for our focus on wearable arts the students all participated in a creative project.

We were extremely fortunate to have Les Meadows come in and explain the design process to the students.  He showed them examples of the various stages and emphasized the importance of the design brief. Each class then worked on a project which included sketching, researching, designing, creating, reflecting, modifying and evaluating.  We will be using some of these creative projects to decorate the hall for our WOW show in week 5.

The Design Process by Lucy

The other day Les Meadows came to show us the process of designing. He explained to us how you have to make your new idea interesting and how to make a mood board.

Les talked about the whole design process to Pōhutukawa. He did a presentation of his and his team’s amazing creations. He taught us all the steps of making our very own creation. He and his team made an actual working vehicle! It just shows what you can create when you put your mind to it.

Les showed us and taught us that you have to do a lot of sketching. Without sketching you would have no idea what you were doing!

To make a mood board you can use whatever you want. You can start out big and narrow it down. This process is called a double diamond. A mood board consists of many things; colours, fabrics photos and sometimes even a blurb!

Thank you Les for coming in to explain the Process of Design!

We had to make sketches and ideas, then we had to use plaster of Paris and paint it. Me and Ana enjoyed making our ‘half young half old’ masks. Emmie

There was something nice about the procedure of making the mask. Brainstorming, designing, and making it. I made a clown that could haunt anyone! Oscar

During our creative project, we designed and sewed book themed cushions, I discovered that I am great at stabbing myself with needles. With practice I perfected the running stitch and created a Dog Man inspired cushion. Tom

From planning to tracing, gluing to sewing, I finally finished my creative project. It took a lot of time and work but I am proud of my finished cushion. Rocco

My highlight from term 1 was learning how to sew. I made a cushion. I found it tricky at first. Holden
