Science in Pōhutukawa

Pōhutukawa —

Science - knowledge about the natural world that is based on facts learned through experiments and observation

Last term the Pōhutukawa students studied elements of science across the four classrooms.  We looked at the properties of substances, states of matter and how particles form solids, liquids and gases.  We predicted, and tested, which changes to food matter (caused by heat) were reversible. Students delved deep underground (virtually) to learn about the 5 layers of the Earth, from the inner core to the crust.  The Solar System formed another part of our science journey, examining the size, colour and the distances between the planets.

" I liked doing solar systems with Mr. O'Halloran because it is a fun way of doing art while learning. The way you have to paint but have to calculate the amount of wire you need to stick the planet to the sun." Tom - Room 5

"We did the earth surfaces in Room 6 with Mr Ellis. I liked how he taught us about the different layers of the Earth and how they looked!" Scarlett - Room 4

"I liked learning about matter with Mrs Meadows because you got to draw and colour and learn at the same time!" Heidi - Room 5

"I enjoyed the melting chocolate and cheese with Mrs Barnes learning about changes in gas, liquids and solids." Ale - Room 5
