Definition: Identifying features of bullying:

Vidisha Ishver —

1.It is deliberate, hurtful behaviour

2.It is often repeated over time

3.It is often difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves

4.It is difficult for those who bully to learn new behaviours

5.The bully has, and exercises, power over the victim

6.Cyberbullying can be disseminated very quickly to a wider audience


Forms of bullying:

1.Physical violence2.Bullying of students with special needs, racist, homophobic 3.Emotional and/or verbal- name calling, exclusion, threatening & coercion4.Damage to property- taking lunches, destroying school books

5.Cyberbullying- mobile phone and internet bullying


Focus on:

•Continual training of staff•Positive well-explained school rules•Teachers/aides present during transitions between class & play•Cyclical programs with anti-bullying messages •Teacher aides in the playground (alongside teachers) most classes•Sound classroom & playground behaviour management•Using school-wide systems & shared understandings•Perpetual state of self-review •Parent involvement
