Sports news from Mr O

Belinda Campbell —

Sport in term two has kicked off at full speed with MNS teams in the Y3/4 and Y5/6 basketball leagues at Akau Tangi Sports Centre and also Y5/6 netball in the Motu Kairangi competition.

A huge thank you to the parents involved in helping out with those teams, we couldn't do it without you!

We also have our annual MNS Cross Country happening on Tuesday 9th May (PP Friday 12th). All the syndicates have been training hard and making great progress. These training runs AND the event on the day will form the basis for selecting our Y4-6 runners for the Eastern Zone cross country event on Wednesday 24th of May. If a runner is absent for the school cross country event, we can look at the way they have run in the training sessions and use this to help inform our selection.

A reminder of the purpose of this event: While we do record placings for this event, the primary focus for this event is NOT competitive.

As per the NZ curriculum:

In health and physical education, the focus is on the well-being of the students themselves, of other people, and of society through learning in health-related and movement contexts.

The primary goal of cross country for each student is to improve their own personal fitness and to build fitness habits that will last their entire life. There is also substantial evidence of the link that exists with physical activity and improved mental well being. Here is a link to some great information on the topic from SPARC and the Mental Health Foundation.

This is the timetable for the day:
