Kowhai Calendar Art

Miramar North School —

Not only do our calendar art this year look fabulous but we all explored and learnt about painting techniques along the way!

Calendar Art Room 3

We had fun deciding on what to do for our calendar art this year. We discussed what we wanted to do as a class and even though I was sure I had a good idea, Room 3 decided on something different. They wanted painting techniques, crazy houses, landscapes galaxies, and planets. So we did a quick search and came up with a plan. First we created our ‘moon paper’ by painting on different layers of colour and dragging card across the page to create a textured effect. Then we used sponges to paint the night sky, and flicked paint across it to make the stars. We cut hills and ‘crazy’ houses out of black paper and added yellow highlights for the final effect. WOW! We love them!😎

Room 2 The focus of Kowhai Syndicate Calendar Art was inspired by our production ‘The Whole of the Moon’. The students decided on a solar system design. First we painted card with 3 layers of different colour, then splattered white on black construction paper, cut out different sized circles and glued them onto the background paper.

In Room 1 we linked our art to our Whole of the Moon Production.  We were inspired by the artist Peter Thorpe who creates amazing space art.  We learnt techniques such as splatting, dabbing, rolling and dabbing with sponges for our backgrounds. We also watched youtube clips on how to draw different rockets. We learnt about warm and cool colours. The backgrounds are warm colours and our rockets are warm colours. Pastel, and paint were our mediums.  After we created our art we also wrote descriptions about setting off into space using all of our senses to capture what it would be like. So many different kinds of connections to other curriculum areas. 😀

"We all took turns painting layers for our planets. We didn't have all the colours we needed so we mixed the colours to make them." -Lauren
