Our Edible Garden Story So Far:

Our edible garden is now open for everyone to wander through and spend time in.

A BIG THANK YOU goes to: Mrs Kesry for leading this project so well. Room 3 - WEKA 2023 and all their families for supporting the project so willingly with their time and resources. All of the other children around school who have helped out over the months along with the families who took time to water the vegetables and care for the garden over the long holiday.

All of the families that volunteered their time, especially the digger driver who started us off.

The Leith family who lead the building project and took time to collect gravel for the pathways, gave us bricks and donated resources used.

Our lovely caretakers Barry and Blair for keeping on smiling as we made yet another request for help.

The local companies that donated time and items needed for the garden including: Bunnings, Hellers, New World Miramar, Kilbirnie Countdown, Pak’n Save, Mitre 10, Trailer Hire, Wellington City Council, the Hutt City Council, borrowing diggers and lots of local families in our community.

In the coming weeks we will be planting fruit trees and bushes, adding seats and more mulch, spreading wood chip across the ground, setting up compost bins and adding more native plants and trees. Grass will be laid around the log area so that we have somewhere to sit together.

We are so happy to involve all of the school community in this garden, and we would encourage you all to use and enjoy the produce and care for the space as kaitiaki.

There will be an opening ceremony in Term 1 to celebrate this resource.

Things we are looking forward to doing in the garden:

  • Relax

  • Sit and listen to the birds singing

  • Watch the plants grow

  • Weed

  • Meet our friends for a chat

  • Draw/sketch plants, birds, trees, clouds…….

  • Learn together

  • Sing

  • Meet and eat

  • Take time out.

So that this can happen we have shared these rules with our tamariki.

Please be careful when you are in the garden:

  • Walking - not running (there are rocks, planter boxes, branches, stones, steps……)

  • Please walk on the paths or the wood chip and stay off the garden beds.

  • Please do not step on the plants.

  • Only pick plants with an adult.

  • Please do not climb on the planter boxes - they aren’t meant for climbing on.

  • No balls or chasing games in the garden area please.

  • Please do not walk on the ‘sitting logs’, These big logs are to sit on, if it’s been raining you might slip and fall.
