New Cell Phone Policy 2023

Board of Trustees —

As a school community, we are concerned about our students’ well-being and believe that young people need space from their cell phones - not because cell phones are bad. Current research suggests that the mere presence of cell phones reduces cognitive capacity – even in bags or pockets, the device's proximity has a negative impact, especially if it is receiving notifications or alerts. They are having a negative impact on learning and engagement.

Expectations

From the start of Term 1, 2023, there will be clear expectations around the use of cell phones by Monrad Te Kura Waenga o Tirohanga students during the school day so they do not interfere with school life. These guidelines are to be observed between 9.00 am and 3.00 pm on school days and special school events outside regular school hours.

Year 7 and 8 students at Monrad Te Kura Waenga o Tirohanga cell phones are not brought to school at all OR must be turned off and stored in class lockers at all times between 9.00 am and 3.00 pm, including between lessons and during break times. This also applies to smartwatches.

Consequences:

Should a cell phone be visible or audible during the school day, in contravention of these guidelines, there will be the following consequences:

1. Cell phones will be confiscated and handed back to students at the end of the day.

2. Cellphones will be confiscated, labelled and held in the office until collected by a parent/caregiver.

If there is an urgent need for communication that cannot wait until the end of the school day, students and parents can make contact with one another through the school office.

There are many social, emotional and academic benefits for our students from restrictions around cell phone access during the school day.
