Te Kura Waenga o Tirohanga

Matt and Lewis —

In 2018 after an extensive consultation process with iwi, whānau, tamariki, kaimahi and hapori (community), our kura was honoured to be gifted names from Rangitāne o Manawatū for our kura, buildings and learning spaces.

Our names draw upon the natural environments of Manawatū, the region's local history, and the legends of Rangitāne, emphasising the landscape, waterways, and heritage sites.

'Tirohanga', the name bestowed upon our kura, is a peak on Tararua that sits high in the clouds. The ancestor and explorer Mātangi named Tirohanga as he travelled across the ranges to pursue a flock of birds known as 'Te Whiri Kōkō'. Mātangi went further to name other well-known landmarks and heritage sites within our region.

'Tirohanga' is our mountain peak, and our kura represents 'Tirohanga'. We have high standards, and we are a kura of excellence that encourages, engages and excels. 'Ko Tirohanga te taumata' - Tirohanga is the standard, Tirohanga is the aspiration and Tirohanga (the sky) is the limit!
