Positive Behavior for Learning

We are a PB4L school. This is about creating an environment where positive things happen and students feel safe and nurtured. Our kura environment allows learning to thrive and flourish, with students being rewarded for displaying our school expectations and values.

Schoolwide expectations - Monrad Mana:

Treat ourselves with respect, Respect the rights of all people, Respect all property and Do the right thing

Creativity: Thinking outside the box

Excellence: Being truly the best you can be

Resilience: the ability to cope and recover

Commitment: being dedicated to something - trying new things!

Pre-correct scripts: What are they, and why are they a key feature in our daily life at Tirohanga?

Pre-corrects contain a statement with a specific positive behaviour focus for the day and are distributed to classes at brain food time by students. Pre-corrects are shared and discussed daily with students on practising Monrad’s expectations and ensuring that we are all doing our best to display Monrad Mana throughout the day.

Mana and commitment are 2 of our values that we are currently focusing on as we ask all of our tamariki to sign up or trial for the vast range of activities presently available schoolwide.

Values tickets: our students are given a yellow values ticket when they are seen using our Kura’s values. Values tickets will then earn a values band, and when all 5 bands are earnt, a Monrad Tirohanga values badge. This is highly sought after by our students and comes with a range of rewards for achieving.

Every term, we set a target amount of value tickets for students to earn. If this is achieved, the whole will celebrate with a rewards day at the end of the term.

We love acknowledging students at assemblies by rewarding value bands and badges. Last Wednesday, in a whole school assembly in the hall, we celebrated the success of our tamariki, who had earned bands or badges. Ka pai!

We draw a selection of random value tickets and give out cool spot prizes, so even if our tamariki still need to earn a value band or badge, making our value tickets still gives all students a chance at a prize.

Talk to your tamaiti/child about our school-wide expectations and values and see what they can tell you about them. You could also ask them if they received a values ticket yet, and if so, what was it for?

Positive Behavior for Learning is what we are all about!

Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui!
