Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

PB4L Team —

We are a PB4L school, and this is about creating an environment where positive things happen, and students feel safe and nurtured. Our kura environment allows learning to thrive and flourish, with students being rewarded for displaying our school values.

Pre corrects: What are they and why are they a key feature in our daily life at Tirohanga?

Pre-corrects contain a statement that has a specific positive behaviour focus for the day and are distributed to classes at brain food time by students. Pre-corrects are then shared and discussed with students giving opportunities to debate, discuss, role play scenarios that allow a deeper understanding of our Kuras values.. One of the key values we have been focussing on recently is showing resilience when things are difficult or do not go to plan. Resilience can be a very hard concept for our students to recognise and act on. We strongly encourage Whānau to also have a discussion with tamariki about these issues to help support the learning journey that happens here.

PB4L messages:

  • We love acknowledging students at assemblies by rewarding value bands and badges. Last Wednesday in a whole school assembly in the hall we celebrated the success of our tamariki who had earnt either bands or badges. Ka pai!

  • We draw a selection of random value tickets and give out cool spot prizes so even if our tamariki have not yet earned a value band or badge, earning our value tickets still gives all students a chance at a prize.

  • Our tamariki have earned 16463 value tickets as a school this year.

    Term 1 6930
    Term 2 6520
    Term 3 3013

Our goal is 5000 tickets a term, therefore we have 1987 left to earn this term before our whole school reward.

The top earning classroom is Kahuterawa with 6081, ko koutou a runga!

  • Professional learning:

Next week 26th and 27th August our Kaiako from the PB4L team will be attending the National conference for PB4L in Wellington. This conference offers many different workshops for our professional learning and will also further our learning journey around Restorative Practice. This will help staff to address behaviors using a 3 phase process to ‘Keep the small things small’.

Positive Behavior for Learning is what we are all about!

Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui!
