Te Whare Puoro- The Music Room

Matua Jon —

It's been a busy start to the year over in the music room with many enthusiastic pupils, old and new signing up for a whole range of classes and activities.

Here's a summary of what we are offering in 2023.

Singing Club

In place of the usual choir, we have a Singing Club that runs on Thursday after lunch. We will sing the occasional song together but for most of the time, individual singers come to the microphone and sing a song of their choice to karaoke backing tracks. All are welcome. There is no obligation to sing, though if you are coming, a long-term goal should be to sing a song for Singing Club at some stage.

Singing club acts as great preparation for...

Under the Lamp

Once a term we take part in an Open Mic Night at The Stomach open to all singers up to Year 8 from around the region. The next Under the Lamp is on Thursday 23rd March at 6pm.

Bands

We have a proud history of Rock/Pop bands here at Monrad Tirohanga. This year we have 2 Y8 bands who are working on a couple of songs each at the moment with a view to being performance ready by early in Term 2.

There is also a Y7 development band that meet on Thursdays before lunch. There are still spaces available in the Y7 group for anyone interested. No experience is necessary.

Keyboard Academy

We have just purchased a set of new keyboards with an amazing onboard tutorial function. While all students coming to regular music classes will get a small taster of this, we can offer a free Keyboard Academy on Thursdays from 2.15 pm for up to 16 students. This will be mainly self-directed learning. Places for this are still available.

Just Brass

Our very successful Just Brass programme is entering its 5th year. This is an opportunity for students to learn a brass instrument with a professional tutor. Lessons take place twice a week:

Tuesday mornings 9.30-10.30am

Thursday afternoons 3.00- approx 6.00pm (transport provided from school to the venue and home afterwards)

Tuition, transport and instrument hire are all free. Just Brass is an initiative provided by the Salvation Army.

Places are limited. Please enquire if you are interested in joining.

Drum and Guitar Lessons on Thursdays

These have proved to be extremely popular this year and our tutors currently have no vacancies. We are happy to start a waiting list.

Timetabled Music Class

All Monrad Tirohanga students will come to a timetabled music class for 6-8 weeks during this year. This is a very hands-on mix of percussion/drums, keyboards, ukulele and guitar lessons with a focus on popular music as a context for learning.
