PPTA UNION MEETING
There will be a Paid Union Meeting for PPTA members on Wednesday 28 June. School will close at 1.05pm.
NCEA EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS
Next week, we are running the NCEA corequisite external assessments for Literacy and Numeracy for our Year 10 students. These assessments are important because students need to pass the three assessments in order to be awarded NCEA Level One, Two or Three.
Each year there are two opportunities to sit these assessments - one next week and another in October. Students who still have not passed these corequisites by the end of the year can attempt them again next year as Year 11s or the following year as Year 12s.
Students from Year 7 through to Year 10 have been preparing for these assessments over the years learning foundational literacy and numeracy skills. This year our Year 10 students have practiced similar assessments in class and have also practiced logging in to NZQA so that they can complete the digital assessment.
Students will need to bring their own charged devices to each assessment. We will have some back-ups.
The assessments will run as follows:
Tuesday 13 June Period 1 and 2 - NCEA Numeracy
Thursday 15 June Period 3 and 4 - NCEA Literacy Reading
Friday 16 June Period 3 and 4 - NCEA Literacy Writing.
If a student is away for any of these assessments, they can sit the standards in the next round in October.
LOST PROPERTY
There are a large number of items in the lost property bin which is located in the foyer of the gymnasium. Quite a few of these are named items and we encourage students (and parents) to check the bin if you currently have missing items.
INSPIRING THE FUTURE
Inspiring the Future is a new programme for schools across Aotearoa, where members of the community share their career stories - their jobs, the pathway they took to get there, and challenges/successes they experienced - with students in fun and inspiring events.
The aim of the programme is to show children a wide range of career opportunities, including those they may not be aware of, and to challenge stereotypes that can hold them back.
We’re interested in running Inspiring the Future events locally and need our whānau and members of the community to sign up to share their stories with students. It’s a great way to get involved with local schools and to inspire young people to one day be in your role or involved with your wider industry.
Signing up as a role model doesn’t mean you have to participate in events. You can accept or decline event invitations as you wish based on your availability.
To find out more and sign up please visit inspiringthefuture.org.nz
Any questions please email Charlotte at careers@mtaspiring.school.nz
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR NCEA STUDENTS
Key Reminders:
Some key reminders for students about NCEA and the valid and fair management of our assessments at MAC:
Get your work in by the deadline date. Extensions are not a right.
Don’t plagiarise or copy others work (online or friends or AI).
Don’t take time off to finish internal work - be organised (fairness).
You have the right to appeal a grade within reason - talk to your teacher or the head of learning area.
Keep track of your progress - particularly around literacy and numeracy and in UE approved subjects in Y13.
Be organised and communicate well with teachers.
How to pass NCEA:
Level One: 80 credits which include 10 literacy and 10 numeracy credits. Literacy credits can come from English and many other subjects. Students who sat and passed the literacy or numeracy pilot in 2022 or this year will have those credits counted for NCEA and for the literacy and/or numeracy requirements in 2023.
In order to gain an excellence endorsement 50 excellence credits are required. A merit endorsement requires 50 merit or excellence credits at or above the level.
A course endorsement in a particular subject requires 14 merit or excellence credits including at least three credits from an external assessment (excluding PE). Credits must be earned in the same calendar year for a course endorsement.
Level Two: 60 credits from Level Two plus 20 from another level. Level One literacy and Numeracy. Endorsements are the same rules as for Level One.
Level Three: 60 credits from Level Three plus 20 from Level Two or better. Level One literacy and Numeracy. Endorsements are the same rules as for Level One.
University Entrance: See here for full details, but the key points are:
Level Three
Three UE approved subject passes of at least 14 credits total.
Level one Numeracy
Level two literacy (requires 5 approved reading credits and 5 approved writing credits.
Contact Ms Ashton if you have any major issues.
COLLEGE FUNDRAISER
An adventure town deserves an adventure playground at school.
Quality, well designed playgrounds mean students who are physically and mentally healthier, with minds prepared for learning.
Help 'Parents and Friends of MAC' raise funds for a new adventure playground for students. If every student contributed $67, there could be a new adventure playground available next year! We know that’s not possible for all, so we’ll be fundraising and applying for grants. Please help if you can - either by visiting our "Givealittle" page https://givealittle.co.nz/org/mount-aspiring-college, or parents of the school - please select the link below which will take you directly to the myKindo site. All payments generate an automatic receipt.
If you would like to donate directly to the school bank account: Westpac, Wanaka, MAC Board of Trustees 03-1739-0027820-00 Ref: playground.
If you are interested in getting involved with 'Parents and Friends of MAC', please register your details in the form linked on our website.
